M308 Mann family gravestone, East Kilbride cemetery

Over a decade after the firm carried out alterations at his home at 3 Montgomerie Crescent, Robert M. Mann commissioned Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh to design a gravestone commemorating his young son James. who had died in January 1910. By this date, the Mann family was living at 'Rhubeg', Busby, south of Glasgow, which probably explains the commission name, 'Busby memorial stone', recorded in the job book. Busby was located in the parish of East Kilbride; the memorial stone is located in East Kilbride cemetery. 1 Robert Mann served in the First World War, reaching the rank of major. He was killed on active duty in France in November 1917 and his name was subsequently added to the stone. Mann is also commemorated on public war memorials at East Kilbride, at Greenbank Church, Clarkston (a short distance from Busby), at Busby Bowling Club and at Troon Golf Club. 2

Authorship: This is one of over 270 jobs carried out in the office of John Honeyman & Keppie (Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh from 1901) during Mackintosh's time there. Mackintosh undoubtedly worked on many of these, but there is no specific evidence for his involvement in this case.
