Mackintosh designed a white-painted chimneypiece incorporating a gesso panel, and a steel fender inlaid with glass jewels and two 'apple-green leather cushions' for an existing fireplace in the home of Mrs Wylie Hill, a cousin of Jessie Newbery, embroiderer and teacher at the Glasgow School of Art, and wife of Wylie, Hill Robert. 1 Mackintosh contributed to work at Wylie Hill's business premises while apprenticed to John Hutchison. The Wylie Hills were connected to the Rowat family, other patrons of Mackintosh;Robert James Rowat for example commissioned work at his Glasgow home, 34 Kingsborough Gardens. The fireplace was removed from the Lilybank Terrace at an unknown date; the fender, the only known surviving component, is in the collection of the Glasgow School of Art.

Authorship: Two Mackintosh drawings are known for the fireplace: one includes the fender; the other is a sketch of Margaret Macdonald's gesso panel Heart of the Rose 2 A steel fender matching the drawing was presented to the Glasgow School of Art in 1952. 3 Most of the job book entry is in his hand.
Mackintosh carried out several comparable interior projects for members of the Rowat family: for Isabella's mother at Warriston, Paisley; for her brother, Robert Rowat, and his wife Jenny, at 14 Kingsborough Gardens; and at Prospect Hill House, Paisley for her cousin Edith.
