J. Monkhouse Cartmell
Engineer
The son of Carlisle's City Treasurer, John Monkhouse Cartmell was apprenticed to engineering companies in Carlisle and Newcastle, before receiving a Board of Trade Certificate as a marine engineer. 1 He first appears in the Glasgow Post Office Directory in 1889 at various addresses, then from c. 1903 at 69 Buchanan Street, as a consulting engineer and agent for U.S. and English machinery makers. 2 He became an Associate of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1901, and also joined the new Concrete Institute (founded 1908, now the Institution of Structural Engineers), by 1911. 3 He was a specialist in reinforced concrete structures, and died in 1930, aged 70. 4
