Scottish tabloid newspaper the Daily Record was first published in 1895 by the Amalgamated Press, owned by Alfred Harmsworth, later Lord Northcliffe, alongside its existing publication the North British Daily Mail. The newspapers were printed at Frederick Lane, Glasgow with further company premises in the city at Union Street and Melville Lane. 1 In May 1901, production was moved to a new building in Renfield Lane designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and soon afterwards the two newspapers were amalgamated to form the Daily Record and Mail, which first appeared in March 1902. 2
In the 1920s the Daily Record was bought by the Associated Scottish Newspapers Ltd, which then also acquired another Glasgow paper, the Evening News. Larger premises for printing were required and production moved out of the Mackintosh building to a new building in Hope Street. 3 In 1944 the company became known as the Scottish Daily Record and Evening News Ltd. The Evening News was discontinued in the 1950s.
The company responsible for publishing theDaily Record and its sister edition the Sunday Mail has traded under various names and has been owned by numerous media conglomerates since the 1950s including Daily Mirror Newspapers Ltd under chairman Cecil Harmsworth King, nephew of Lord Northcliffe, International Publishing Corporation, Mirror Group Newspapers and from 1999 Trinity Mirror PLC. 4
In 1971, production of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail moved to new buildings at Anderston Quay where it became the first UK daily newspaper to be printed in colour. 5 In 2011, the newspapers continue in print and online and are among the most popular in Scotland.
