Robert Murdoch

Mason

Robert Murdoch was a Glasgow stonemason. His father was Thomas Murdoch of Connell & Murdoch, monumental sculptors, who worked in Caledonian Road from the late 1850s. 1 Robert commenced work under his own name in 1863, but after his father died in 1865, he appears to have traded on his earlier reputation working as 'Thomas Murdoch & Son' (or sometimes 'Sons'). 2 Between 1871 and 1891 the business moved between the Gorbals, Tradeston and Pollokshields. 3

Murdoch was politically active, sitting on Gorbals Parochial Board between the 1870s and the 1890s, and was vice chairman of Tradeston Liberal Association in 1886. 4
