W. Thom

Slater

Slaters and plasterers William Thom & Son of Helensburgh, was formed by Thom, originally from Airdrie, Lanarkshire, and his stepson, James Campbell Mackie (later Thom). 1 William Thom followed his father's trade, and after marrying the widowed Mrs Mackie in 1878, his new family left Airdrie for Helensburgh, where he and his stepsons were all working as slaters by 1891. 2 During the 1890s, the Thoms lived and worked from several adjacent properties in William Street, Helensburgh. When William retired in 1903, James C. M. Thom continued the firm, which was still trading in 1924. 3 James' brother, Alexander Mackie Thom (d. 1947), had his own separate slater's firm in Dumbarton. 4
