G. & R. Wemyss

Plasterers, granolithic suppliers

G. & R. Wemyss, plasterers, Glasgow, referred to George Ferguson (c. 1881–1969) 1 and Ralph Dugald Wemyss (c. 1884–1966). 2 They were 'third generation' plasterers, sons of plasterer Joseph George Wemyss (c. 1859–1933), whose own father had followed the same trade. 3 Since 1891 or so, Joseph G. Wemyss had been a partner in Wemyss & Livingstone, in Langside Road and then Victoria Road, Govanhill. 4 Wemyss & Livingstone searched unusually widely for workmen in the 1890s, advertising in Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds and Belfast. 5 The business undertook general building as well – erecting tenements in Crosshill (1897), and cottages in Nickleby Road, Shawlands in 1905. 6

George and Ralph were both apprentice plasterers in 1901, 7 living with their parents in St Ronan's Drive, Shawlands. In 1911, G. & R. Wemyss appeared in the Post Office Directory, as plasterers, 8 In 1923, Wemyss & Livingstone were dissolved, and their father continued trading on his own account. 9 The brothers formed G. & R. Wemyss Ltd. as a private joint-stock company in 1938, 'to undertake the business as builders and contractors, slaters and plasterers', with £2,000 capital. 10 The company had been wound up, and was removed from the Companies Register by 1961. 11
